The Otto Schaefer Museum features an astonishing collection of book arts and also graphic and decorative arts and shows the history of book print. It contains the unique library of Otto Schaefer (1912-2000). His collection reaches from early prints of illustrated books from the 16th back to the 15th century and many works of more recent German literature to a notable number of contemporary book bindings. Therefore it illustrates the development of book bindings from the Middle Ages up to the 20th century. The Otto Schaefer Museum also shows the collection established by the town physician Leonhard Bausch (1574-1636) which covers documents of all fields of knowledge. In addition, it features the library of the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt, a collection of contemporary graphic art and the Morell collection of antique glass. It is of special interest for all fans of medieval and pre-modern literature as well as for anyone interested in history. For research purposes it offers a reading room and free access to their library at announced visits.
